Reception
The album received mostly positive reviews from critics, who praised the rock and pop songs as well as the score. Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic gave the album four out of five stars, calling it "a surprisingly consistent and entertaining album". He wrote that "the soundtrack to Armageddon is much like the film itself -- loud, bombastic, and artificial, yet quite enjoyable on its own terms". He also complimented Aerosmith's performance, saying that they "sound better than they have in years".[12]
Robert Christgau of The Village Voice gave the album a B+ rating, saying that it was "a rare soundtrack that makes sense as a concept album". He noted that "the concept is blowing up the world, which is why it's so heavy on hard rock and power ballads". He also praised Aerosmith's contribution, calling them "the perfect band for this project".[13]
David Browne of Entertainment Weekly gave the album a B- rating, saying that it was "a competent but generic collection of rock and pop". He wrote that "the soundtrack to Armageddon works best as a souvenir for those who enjoyed the movie". He also criticized some of the songs as being "recycled" or "filler".[14]
The album was also nominated for several awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Compilation Soundtrack Album for a Motion Picture, Television or Other Visual Media, and a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song for "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing".[15][16]
